Resisting the Holy Spirit

And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. —Deuteronomy 30_6This week on the Everyday Jesus podcast, we started a discussion on the Holy Spirit. We talked about who He is and the fact that he is actively working in our world today. We also mentioned that the Holy Spirit can be resisted, quenched and grieved. If you missed the podcast, be sure to catch up with us by pressing the play button on the player below:

So let’s focus a little closer on the phrase resisting the Holy Spirit. As Christians, we believe that God’s grace is irresistible, meaning that when God chooses for you to be saved, he makes his grace so appealing that your heart cannot help but to submit to Him. EP # 6 – The Holy Spirit is the forgotten God?

The Holy Spirit is the Forgotten God_

Recently we’ve been talking about the different ways in which we can live for Jesus every day. And I thought it may be a good time to step back and spend some time on the Holy Spirit.

Francis Chan calls the Holy Spirit in one of his books – the forgotten God (also the name of his book). Chan says that by and large the church has forgotten this key person in the Godhead. And I certainly agree that the Holy Spirit has been largely left out of Continue reading “EP # 6 – The Holy Spirit is the forgotten God?”

Speak Lord, Your Servant Hears – Hearing

Merry Christmas (1)

Continuing on our theme this week, we have been talking about praying and hearing from God. If you haven’t taken the time to listen to this week’s episode of the Everyday Jesus podcast, please do so now by clicking on the play button below.

We also spent some time on Tuesday’s blog post diving deeper into what this means by recognizing our role as a servant. You can catch up that by clicking on the link below:

Speak Lord, Your Servant Hears – Serving

Now let’s dive a little more into the last word in that instruction that Eli gave Samuel – Continue reading “Speak Lord, Your Servant Hears – Hearing”

Speak Lord, Your Servant Hears – Serving

Speak Lord, Your Servant Hears-Serving

On this week’s episode we discussed the need for prayer and we spent some time focusing on Samuel and how God may choose to speak to us. If you haven’t listened to this week’s episode of the Everyday Jesus podcast, do so now by clicking on the play button below.

I wanted to spend a little bit more time focusing in our passage in 1st Samuel 3. We see Eli the priest giving Samuel this advice for the next time the Lord calls out for you, reply, Continue reading “Speak Lord, Your Servant Hears – Serving”

EP # 5 – The Power of Prayer

Power of Prayer

In this episode, we look at one of most fundamental elements of the Christian faith – prayer. Specifically we look at the need for us to have God speak into our lives by using the example of Samuel. Our Good News segment is about the nephew of the Masterpiece Cake owner becoming a Christian. Our unreached people group for the week is the Hakka of China. And Today’s Word is found in John 2:15-25. This famous passage talks about Jesus throwing the money changers out of the temple!

Speak, Lord. Your servant hears.

As we have been talking about living for Christ daily, one of the main issues that needs to Continue reading “EP # 5 – The Power of Prayer”

Setting Your Mind on Christ

www.everydayjesus.net

If you haven’t listened to the Everyday Jesus podcast this week, I encourage you to do  that now. Click on the player below.

Continuing on those thoughts, let’s look a little deeper at one of the points I made at the beginning of the podcast – Setting your mind on Christ. In Colossians we find a similar verse as the one we studied in Romans:

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.” Col 3:2-5

This verse is similar to the one we looked at in the podcast, but it offers us something a little more telling. In this section of Scripture, Paul gives us something to do. We are to Continue reading “Setting Your Mind on Christ”

EP #4 – Taking Up Our Cross

Taking Up Our Cross

In this episode we look at the verse where Jesus commands us to take up our cross daily. We discuss some Good News regarding pro-life and abortion laws in California. The Khmer of Central Cambodia is our Unreached People group. And I touch on the sometimes controversial topic of alcohol when we look at Today’s Word in John 2:1-12.

So as we continue our discussion in what it looks like to follow Jesus daily. We need to take some time to discuss one of the most famous verses regarding daily living for Christ. Luke 9:23 says “And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Here we find Jesus praying alone with just his disciples with him. When he asks them who do they say I am? He gets responses about him being John the Baptist, Elijah or Continue reading “EP #4 – Taking Up Our Cross”

EP #3 – Teach Us To Number Our Days

Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom_

Podcast #3 is up and ready! See notes and links below.

Everyday Jesus

A podcast for everyday Christians trying to follow Jesus every day.

Opening Monologue –

So last week we started a series on how to live for Jesus while you are living your everyday life. What does that look like? What are some good ways to get started.

This week we plan on continuing to look at ways we can serve him while working a regular job. As a reminder, this isn’t for preachers or monks. This is for Plumber Joe and Continue reading “EP #3 – Teach Us To Number Our Days”

Seeking the Lord, like David did

Seeking the Lord, Like David Did

If you’ve been listening to the Everyday Jesus podcast, you will know that we’ve been discussing ways in which we can follow Jesus everyday. Following Jesus sometimes requires us to inquire of the Lord. Meaning we need to seek him for guidance.

To see what this looks like, let’s look at a snippet in the life of King David in the Old Testament. We are going to look at 1st Samuel 23. For a little background, David at this point in his life has been anointed King of Israel, but as of yet, has not ascended to the Continue reading “Seeking the Lord, like David did”

EP #2 – Three Ways to Serve Christ Daily

Living for christ and making a living

Podcast Notes:

How do we live for Christ and make a living?

When most people think of living for Christ, they automatically think about a priest or a monk or a preacher. They think of someone they are not. They think of someone with plenty of time on their hands and plenty of knowledge.

Jesus called his disciples and guess what? They were not seminarians or theologians. They were fisherman. They were tax collectors. They were sinners. Nowhere near Continue reading “EP #2 – Three Ways to Serve Christ Daily”
